I see this so often and it has started to bother me, especially the digitigrade mod in Skyrim. Proverbial "they" line up the toes when switching to digitigrade but they should really line up the ankles since the center of mass of the character needs to be within their own footprint in order to properly stand upright... actually, depending on how superfloof the tail is they might need their feets to be behind their butt. it's weird. Feel free to share this to anyone you think could learn from it.

P.S. thinking of balancing this way, with a hacked-to-be-vertical laser pointer in your stomach is a great way to get good at that Wii Fit balance game.
