I have a gryphon based on MLP that's the same way:
He came from an AU where Nightmare Moon rules, and is waging ware to enslave every race, so the gryphons are at war with the ponies.
He ended up be captured and tortured in an attempt to break him and make him a sleeper agent, he tried to fake being broken to get close to NMM, and she banished him...
...And he ended up in the base MLP world.

After he got used to the idea that ponies were not enemies here, he still tries to be a grump and act like he's above all the friendship and hugs. He's a warrior, after all; he has an image to keep. :P
