Decided to try a little animation experiment: using a set number of drawings, could I make several distinct animations of the same arm gaining muscle?
Well, I put together *something* at least
How about the rest of you folks, got a favourite?

I say, for an experiment: it's extremely informative and gives people ideas of what are their own personal best animations and approaches how they wish the animation for muscular growth to be like. And the way how much detail you've added into the arm by default to give it an idea just how large things will get is a definite plus.
I do can imagine that alot of people are into things like the "Pulsing" and such.... but for me? My personal favorites would definitely have to be:
1. Linear (The most detailed and well-flowing animation, giving an idea that the power keeps on increasing at a steady pace. Linear & Overshoot also works here because of it, giving an idea that it settles in after reaching the peak.)
2. All of the "Eases" (Ease in, Ease out and Ease in & out, simply because there's a dynamic flow of how quickly something comes in, yet sets in easy, as if having found a place to settle down into in a comforting way)
3. Breathing (with correct adjustements, it could take as long as possible as well as quick as possible. Being in control of one's growth via breathing would also ease up a bit to the grower's personal needs.)
4. Rumble (The feel in this makes it appear that the grower is flexing as hard as possible to bring out the powerful results the best, like the person is really flexing as HARD as he can to make that arm bulge out to such staggering size and detail. Makes it all the more interesting and adds more weight to it.)

Alright, here's my opinions:
1 - I think my favorite is 2 Forward, 1 Back. I love muscle growth that simulates "pumping up" and this expresses that perfectly! I expect lots of clenched teeth, growling, bulging veins, and sweat involved with this one. Like it takes a LOT of effort, strain, and pleasure to grow the muscle. I find that very hot!
2 - Stagger Pulse + Rumble are the 2nd best. I prefer muscle that grows gradually, or "pumps up" and these two fit that perfectly, but not as much as 2 Forward, 1 Back.
3 - Breathing would be 3rd best. It's got that gradual "pumping" motion I mentioned before, but it's a little too quick for some scenarios, so it goes in 3rd.
Now the ones I'm not too fond of. Again, just my opinions:
Linear, Ease In 1, 2, and 3, and finally Triple Burst are all too quick. If they were slowed down a lot, it might feel better to me, but as is they just seem too fast. Not enough time to feel the growth, or enjoy the swelling of muscle - which is the part that I feel is the hottest aspect of muscle growth. Actually enjoying the sensation as well as the outcome.
Pulse and Pulse Antic feels too cartoonish to me. I'd expect it for a quick bulk up in a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Some will like it, but it's just my opinion.
Also, I have to say, jeez this guide is amazing! So well done, and perfectly executed! I LOVE IT! Here's the hoping you try out a few of these styles in fully fleshed-out animations! Great job, amazing job!

2 forward 1 back, Linear, Linear+overshoot, Breathing, Stagger Pose, and Rumble. Are my most favorite ones!
I'm not too fond of all Ease (in, out, both), Triple burst, Pulse, and Pulse+Antic are all too quick to me to catch every details+shapes that muscle had grown and some are too cartoony to me.

This is really a great work. It's a great example of muscle growth animation. Fast has the charm of fast, slow has the charm of slow, which means you've got a perfect grasp of 'core points'.
What I like is '2 forward 1 back' This gives Grower plenty of time to enjoy the pain and ecstasy of muscle growth. Also, '2 forward 1 back' personally stimulates my imagination about muscle theft.

I thought you were a professional. Guess it takes one to know one. I'm retired myself, but I used to do storyboard and layout for a living in tv animation. Your arm growth chart is excellent, though you did miss one- The Eruption, where the bicep bursts up past the fist, then slaps down into a muscle mass. Very popular in Famous Studio Popeye cartoons.
It was how I used to make my living with my pencil- Kind of a cartooning Rumpelstilken- Only instead of spinning straw into gold, I was turning shit into lead. It was the quality of the scripts the studios paid good money for that I had to fix up- They stunk out loud! And I had to rewrite them to make 'em viable. It was called "plussing" but it really was extensive rewriting. Such was the life of a story board man.
It's something not a lot of folks are aware of I think, the part that animation isn't only about the frames, but also about the motion in between the frames.
I'm in the minority here I think, judging by the other comments, but most of my personal favourites are the shorter ones, like Rumble and the Pulses. To me, they got a "kick" to them that I think gets best achieved from the jump in frames.

My favourite part about this is that this exists.
Not interested in muscle growth but the whole part where you have a set of frames and you reuse them with different timings and recycling the same frames in different ways is what makes this whole animation both instructive and interesting.

Thank you for the kind words, and insight too!
I'm always rather curious how my art can appeal to those outside the muscle fandom, since that's arguably what I'm most known for, so I'm rather joyed to hear that my technical side can draw some eyes over too even if muscle ain't their thing

In a time when I used to have done a couple of Flash bits, I believe my method back then was similar to 2F1B. Though not only would that be my favorite, I also like Rumble & Breathing.
Though I can't imagine how you could figure out the timing to make them all function at once; either with movie icons or however it worked with Flash. Been way to long since I've played with it.
