I was rewatching Catghost 1-11 last night, and was struck by the desire to do a little fan art, which is super rare for me. It's a great series, super layered and weird. I love it so much.

It's weird stuff. The animation reminds me a little of the Fred on Channel One segment of Captain Kangaroo back in the 1960s. Fred was a blobby sort of character who moved on a screen. Decades before CGI, Fred used a technology called Aniforms developed by cartoonist, puppeteer and TV and radio host Hank Stohl.
The stories are... mostly bizarre. The seem to take over my attention for a few minutes, and when their over they leave me feeling a little lost and empty -- like the characters, I guess. I think most casual viewers will relate with Gideon, but the Deep Dive shows that he was actually one of the oppressors. Elon and Naarah are the spirits of witches. Elon apparently assumed the shape of a cat familiar after being burned at the stake and her ashes confined to a jar.. Naarah is sort of a watery blob, appropriate as she was drowned on the ducking stool.
Creepy, weird and fascinating.

It's nothing I ever expected to come across on youtube, that's for sure. oh wow, I've not thought of Captain Kangaroo in ages. I looked up Fred, and despite your explanation, I have no idea how they managed that. You can clearly see he's being puppet animated, not drawn, though.
Fred ran on a sort of screen, but he was essentially a bunraku puppet, with sticks controlling various parts pf the figure. Morey Bunin was the actual artist credited with creating the medium. He developed the process for a show called Barney’s Army; great article here. It explains the concept as well as anything I've seen in my research. If you're really hooked, here's the patent!
