I've seen a couple of memes floating around of people showing how their characters have evolved since their beginnings. Well, here's the Gen from the 1990's vs the Gen of post 2010.
Originally Gen was a cat and was boyishly thin. I didn't really know much about anatomy and could only draw one or two body types. I was blonde at the time so Gen didn't really have much headfur. I'm a leo and was born in the year of the tiger, so Gen had a lion's tail despite being a generic white housecat.
In 2006 I decided to switch her to a fox. Part of it was because a lot of the 'cat people' I knew at the time were insane and I wasn't really feeling feline anymore. At the same time I still liked Gen's basic design and kept a lot of the original design. I thought about animals that represented luck and change and finally went for fox.
Another thing is that I decided to draw her more accurate to my real body shape. I see people draw themselves as rail thin or with wild hair and that's perfectly fine for them, but I'm happy being who and what I am, and decided to start drawing myself as such. (I also had an internet friend arrange a meeting with me, and the only visual description he gave me was that he looked like his persona. The persona was tall, skinny and had blue hair. The person who eventually waved me down was short, tubby, and had curly black hair)
So here you go. Old Gen vs New.

It all started with a contest I never entered. The movie "Willow" had come out and they were asking for anything creative for contest entries. I decided to write a story and as I went along I kept wanting to get an idea of how the characters looked, so I started sketching them. The novel grew to over 200 handwritten pages and was never submitted, and was also never finished as I began to grow more interested in drawing than writing. I'd also always liked animals and routinely wrote talking animals as my story characters.
Then I got my hands on a copy of Critters, a comic that came out in the early 1990's and got to see Steve Gallaci's Birthright stories. That was my first brush with furry fandom and after that point I voraciously devoured every scrap I could find. I started imitating Gallaci, then branched out quite a bit until my style evolved into what you see today.

Gen, this is really cute--I find myself looking at it again and again, comparing the two characters as well as looking over the technical aspects (line weight, shading, pose, etc.).
It's really neat to see how your character has evolved over time. Thanks for sharing with us.

There's a few pictures in my gallery of the inbetween stages of the shift. Just when my hair stopped being brown, I decided to draw her a little more appropriately.
And don't think the shift was due to ALL cats, just the types who brag about being independent and then go crying to everyone that will listen when they stub their toe. Or who brag about how they're mean and dangerous because they have sharp gnashy claws and can take on anyone who bothers them... And then resort to what amounts to verbally urinating on the carpet of people they're angry with when said person isn't looking.
That and.. Well, I own Feep. 'Nuff said

That pretty much sums it up. Mind you, if I really were rail thing I'd draw Gen that way. But alas, genetics have given me broad working class shoulders and wide baby bearing hips, plus I'm too sedentary for my own good.
But as much as I still feel fondness for the old Gen design, I like it as a character that I wish I could use for some project and not as a self projection anymore.

It is, actually. It's the Rune of Torment. I adopted the name Trias from that game as well. You're the second person to comment on it so far, and I can't decide if I'm pleased or disappointed about that number.
I'm enjoying your comic by the way; it's how I came to find you here in the first place.

Interesting story behind the different appearances. I think I may have an idea as to why so many people start out drawing rail thin. I think it's a matter of complexity. A thin character has a much simpler three-dimensional structure than one with a build that has more curves or muscles.
As for looking like one's fursona, I'm aiming for that right from the start. I don't consider myself to be a very good artist, but what harm is there in trying?

Before. If it's any indication of how long I've been into this, my very first furry convention was ConFurence Five in 1994 and I've considered myself a furry since about 1991.
When he was in college in 1990, Uriel was on a non furry Sci-Fi themed muck called Islandia. When Islandia closed down several of the wizards and some of his college friends started FurryMuck, so he ported his character there and rebuilt his areas, which is how I met him in 1993-ish. (We were friends for years before we even considered dating.)
As for how I got into it. Well, for the most part I just always enjoyed drawing and writing stories about animals. My mom HATED animals so I was never allowed to have a pet, so all my animals had to be imaginary. Eventually I learned about like minded people and sort of went on from there.
There's a fairly succinct history of it all on my wikifur page which you can check out here: http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Genesis_Whitmore

Well ok then, that's what I was looking to be answered. *chuckles* I've been a furry since 1989. My mother brought me to her D&D weekend party with her friends. They thought it'd be fun if a "Kid" would write a script for them. So they told me to write up an adventure and I could play.
Heh, little did they know I was a writer at heart, the next party I brought them the script annnnd... well it took them three weeks of partying to get through my script and they loved it. I enjoyed it as well, and in one of the Monster books I came across a standard animal that wasn't a monster, but it was a Fox that was drawn almost human in nature, that got me stuck on the idea of Furry's =^^=
