At 0550 local time on July 24th, 1969, Apollo 11 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean south of Johnston Atoll and 920 miles southwest of Honolulu in Hawaii. Assigned as the primary recovery ship for Apollo 11, the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CVS-12) had recently returned from her final WestPac deployment with Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group FIVE SEVEN (CVSG-57) embarked. Aboard the Hornet when she pulled out of Pearl and headed southwest toward the recovery area was one particular Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King helicopter - one that would become perhaps the most famous Sea King ever.

The Navy views all wrecked aircraft as Navy graves, even if nobody was lost in the aircraft. Theres a Douglas Devastator that was one of 3 Midway combat vets and survivors sitting in the bottom of Lake Superior . Aircraft stalled on take off from the USS Wolverine and bellied in , crew was rescued. Numerous groups have BEGGED the Navy to recover that aircraft since the 90s, pointing out its rarity and historical significance .
But no, Navy keeps refusing the recovery as Zebra Muscles encase it more.
Hell, I remember when they recovered a F6F Hellcat off San Diego in 1975, Pima Air Museum got it, Navy REFUSED to allow the museum to restore the aircraft, allowing it to fully decay and fall apart.
