TMNT started out as a comic book created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastmen when they opened their studio, Mirage which is now known as Mirage Publishing. Back in the 80s, Laird and Eastman wanted a toyline to promote their comic book so they went to Playmates. Playmates actually let them have the toyline, BUT like every other 80s cartoon, they need to have a cartoon show to promote it. So was the birth to the original 1987 cartoon series. The 4kids 2003 version was closer to the original feel of the comic book since Laird was part of the production team. Also around Nov. 2009, Laird sold the entire TMNT franchise to Viacom (Nickelodeon, MTV). Laird still has the rights to produce 18 TMNT comic books a year.

Y'know it's funny. I imagine this is how the turtles wound up. Several years after the failed movie outings, and unsucessful attempts to market them to younger audiences, they hit the sauce, then um...the (pizza) sauce. After gaining a hundred or more pounds, and several heart attacks later, the turtles turned to excercise. Still unable to lose the weight, they continue to work out, but this time adopting a martial art more suited to their excessive weight and carb heavy lifestyle.

interesting, I seem to remember a brief action figure line like that once. Course, it must have also not done well because I never saw them again.
