The academic community continues to argue on the official classification and naming of the aquatic humanoids with eel traits. Some claim they are mermaid because of their aquatic humanoid forms, including a human-like head structure and upper torso. Others argue that due to their lack of arms and long, flexible bodies, they should be classified as naga. A preposterously popular sect proposes to dub them "titty fishies". This particular scholar shall call them eel-women for the remainder of this description.
Eel-ladies are found in shallow ocean waters and deep rivers and are carnivores. They are very cautious creatures and often hide, but are extremely hostile when approached recklessly. Males have yet to be observed in their population, yet there appears to be few to no accounts of eel-ladies mating with land residents like other merfolk. Either eel-ladies mate via parthenogenesis, are secret hermaphrodites, or simply share the same physical features as females.
Despite their anti-social behavior, adult eel-ladies are often observed pairing up in twos and threes with dramatic personality balances, such as a timid eel with an aggressive eel, or a playful one with a cautious partner. The extreme personality differences appear to help balance each other's actions out and make a symbiotic relationship. In the observed case, the younger and more timid Green specimen was often seen soothing the more easily aggravated Purple specimen via cuddles and mating appeals, while the Purple specimen fought off predators and rivals. More observation will be needed to learn more of these creatures, but has been put on hold due to the unfortunate maiming of an intern via the Purple specimen.
One of the merfolk sketches I managed to finish up. I don't know what to call them either, but they were fun to draw!
