It's probably the best way to do something like that.

The multiple operations will be stressful and take more time. But they'll give the patient more time to cope with their new nature, and have much less chance of causing fatal system shock. And if you go gradually, there's a greater likelihood of discovering the limitations of a doctor and given conversion design before you do something lethal to the patient.
