STORY TIEMS
Evening was a welcome relief from the scorching temperatures of the day. The air began to cool, and a pleasant lull wove its way across the wastes. The few creatures that made it their home emerged from their burrows, seeking food. The two travellers, one rough and uncaring, the other shy and depressed. Both walked in silence.
The Wanderer looked to the sky, his violet eyes scanning the darkening plane before him. Night was far better than day for him, the shroud of darkness hid his visage from prying eyes. He felt at home with the darkness. A small noise broke the white marked catfox out of his stupor. Despair was crying softly, holding her arms in what looked to be an effort to keep warm.
Slightly annoyed at this development, the wanderer turned to the girl. "Are you cold?" he asked, knowing very well the answer. "yes.." the girl replied softly, looking to the ground "Tired too". The wanderer sighed. If they kept walking they would make it to Volk while it was still night. He could have got a job from that name-taker that resided there, people were far easier to kill in the night.
Anger flared up in his mind. Why should he care if the girl was tired, he was doing HER a kindness. She should damn well keep walking until she collapsed for what he did for her. Deep in his heart, however, he knew this was not true. He may take lives, he may have a mark on his soul, but he still had a duty to the innocent.
That internal conflict over, he turned to the girl. "We'll make a camp to the roadside" He said, guiding the girl to the side of the trail. Gathering some wood, the wanderer made a small fire too keep them warm, and to scare any of the wild creatures that may try to make the girl their supper. Despair settled near the fire, laying down and closing her eyes for a much needed rest.
The wanderer turned away, looking to the fire, as if to find meaning within its flames. "Why are you so angry all the time?" he heard a small voice ask. Clearly the girl wasn’t asleep just yet. "I'm not angry, just hardened to the world, you have to be to survive" He said simply. "You said you had no name" The girl continued "I should call you anger". The wanderer chuckled at this, the girl had a certain knack for names.
"There was a word I remember from long ago that was for anger. Ire." He continued, hoping that his charge wouldn’t call him something as silly as 'anger'. "Ire it is then" The girl said finally, before drifting off into the land of dreams. "Ire" the wanderer repeated, looking down at his missing finger.
A chilling breeze wafted through the small camp, stirring the fire and making Despair shiver. Ire, without thinking, shred his outer garb, laying his robe over the small girl as a makeshift blanket. He had survived with less than what he had now, he could take one night of the elements. Silently the brown and white catfox walked over to a nearby rock and sat, admiring the stars.
