I'm actually looking forward to this remake! The original is beautiful on it's own so I'm glad they're changing up a bit instead of just copying it. I think Halle Bailey will look great as Ariel so I'm excited to see who else might be casted. Tho I'm concerned as what Sebastian or Flounder will look like if they are added.

Ariel from The Little Mermaid isn't even an original concept since there was a (much darker) novel that Disney took the idea from-- arbitrarily changing the look of the character is almost tradition, by now. That being said?
Comparing the racist and flat out disgusting backlash people are having against a black mermaid to fans thinking Sonic 'didn't look right' is naive at best and made in bad faith at worst. =_= The two aren't even remotely the same.

None of the remakes, to my knowledge anyway, have stuck completely close to the original adaptation. They'd be silly to stick to the original imo, since you want to encourage new viewers to see some changes. Many of the "remakes" are more like "re-imagining" or following closer to actual novels the stories are based on. I liked the changes with Jungle Book, and from what I've been hearing about TLK, definitely liking the changes there too. Many of the arguments against it that I have read just... seem a little too far-fetched to not be masking of...well...blatant bigotry or other sinister thought processes. Not everyone is like that of course but... It's sad that this morning, I googled "black mermaid" and saw the screen nearly filled completely with hatred. Hopefully it will pass.
