There are two reasons for this:
a) any console that's been used for a while will have a Good Controller and a Bad Controller, and of course people aren't gonna let you play with the GOOD controller, or you might win on them.
b) Gremlings live in the game system and hate you specifically for reasons unknown and will travel through the cable to whatever controller you happen to use.

It makes me cry because I suck at video games I used to only play Unreal tournament online but it costs too much now. So I just play solitaire games and sudoku but not so much sudoku any more I am into word games like boggle on my moms laptop. but I suck at that too :T I guess I need more practice..... Or not... U.U
When I use to play Mario Kart all the time as a kid, I had a strict rule when I played with my lil nep.
I was allowed to hit him with any item in case he was in my path, but he COULDN'T hit me at all. I use to continuously pause the game as well in case an item was about to hit him just so he could see the upcoming impact. 😆
It wasn't until Double Dash came out that we worked together since you could share a Kart in that game.

Our favorite combos were Mario+Luigi, Mario+Yoshi, Luigi+Donkey Kong, Yoshi+DK, Diddy+DK, or Wario+Waluigi.
I'm not that way no more though. 😇
Younger Me was a prick when it came to that game, especially Mario Party, the infamous game that ruins friendships and family bonds.

However, if you have no coins or stars, it pays you some coins for free.
