It was an arranged marriage, demanded by Ni Hao's mother and father after his older brother married a native rabbit and his older sister married a Manchurian tiger. "Not quite properly Chinese," his mother and father thought, so they were determined that their youngest son should marry someone from a good family - and his own species.

Besides, the match was past hoping for, as their union would heal a breach between the Black Tiger and Jade Phoenix Tongs. The two leaders put forth the name of Hu Xiu, only daughter of a prominent merchant in Hong Kong, educated in the English school there - and at first completely against the match.

Until they met each other.

Now they're a loving couple, despite what's happened since their marriage. Ni Hao is a psychopath who has murdered some fifty people since he was fourteen years old (he's twenty now). Xiu has only killed two people, and those in self-defense.

Xiu's pregnant with their first child, and Hao is adamant that the baby won't be brought up on Krupmark, home to pirates, drug smugglers, whores and pedophiles. Xiu agrees with him.
