Abuelo Scrub Jay lives at the very edge of the Mojave Desert. Though his species is not migratory, Abuelo made the long journey across the Mexican border as a fledgling, because times were hard in Tijuana and he wanted to make a life for himself in California. He is a womaniser and a heartbreaker, but never expected to find himself without a permanent mate at this late stage in his life.
He is called "Abuelo" not because he is the oldest jay in the region, or the wisest, but because so many of the young jays in the area can trace their paternal lineage back to him.
(Too much Gabriel Garcia Marquez? ...Probably.)
