There are several different types of necromancer. One type studies constantly and begins delving into the realm of necromancy because raising the dead and having unpaid minions affords them more opportunities to study at their leisure. One type is power mad and raises the dead and deals with corrupt magic because they have a desire to have power beyond that which they could otherwise reach. Another type is the Combat Necromancer, which is merely an extension of Combat Mage. They learn to master black magicks so that their power is at its peak when they are surrounded by death. Unlike most other mages, they are also competent bearers of arms and tend to prefer high damage, ornate, if impractical, weapons. They are sculpted by circumstance into a fine edged deadly thing laying waste to those around them and ending every battle with an even larger army.
Ultimately, all these paths lead to madness and death, but the Combat Necromancer is the most likely to take up arms and wield arcane energies to accomplish a greater good. Unfortunately, power corrupts and when your view of the line between life and death blurs, you are lost...
I wasn't sure until my final save on this file whether this was a gnome or a halfling. I looked at it when I was saving and changed it to Gnome. Halfings have hair on their feet.
This took me way too long. Sketched in Sketchbook Pro, lineless finish in Photoshop. Background texture found in my general neighborhood.
Why a gnome? I like cute and dangerous things.
Last post of 2009 ftw.

The thoughts and insight about the nature of the drawing add so much to the completed work.
I must disagree on one part though, if I may, Power Corrupts, true, but power through devoute study and guidance can help to avoid corruption.
Case and point: My Necromancer Cleric of Wee Jass, his job, as he sees it... is to make sure that the dead are in the correct place... either resting in peace or serving out a term of service for an owed debt.
He feels unworthy at times to be a cleric of Wee Jas, as she likes Attractive things as well as smart, he is very smart.. but very avarage in appearance.
But like any school of magic, each must often walk the path alone.
