I'm from Venezuela. There is a similar Joke with a state called "Delta Amacuro" where nobody talks about it because there is the Orinoco river mouth where is only marshes, very far for the rest of the country.
Also in Mexico many people joke about the state of Tlaxcala in a similar way, but It's more related to some historical issues about spaniards and aztecs.
