metallic paints being brushed on tend to look the way, too. maybe you have the means to use a little airbush?
I'm trying to think of a media that would look good, but enamel paint, acrylics, or others always look odd when being brushed on. maybe you can use that for highlights? anyway, looking forward to your colured result. :)
