To bear the fate of your species, to have it rested in your hands, is akin to having a handful of water - a precarious vessel which leaks with even the barest of pressure, or movement, and from which a mere sip from may restore the invigoration of a stagnant being. However, to spill that water, is to lose the last hope of survival in a dangerous universe, where there are no second chances.
Petal reflected well on this as she kept her lithe body hovering above the ground with the soft flaps of her billowing phoenix wings. The Royal Scientist of the Celestial Isles flicked the fox-like ears topping her skull as the tunes of the crystallized monoliths arrayed on either side of her- a soft hum vibrating the very air she hung upon. All this ambiance- this meaningless cacophony - was more to the Foxnix than any other regular creature, a constant flow of information, and past experiences that mingled in her churning mind.
This was her life’s work at play - a final gift to the species that had relied on her for so long, but awaited any moment of weakness she may show. The bittersweet fruits of loyalty was a taste she was well versed with and Petal had no intention of losing that taste now. Her Highness was counting upon Petal’s continued success and the Royal Celestial had no intention of failing her mistress in her time of crisis; the constant need of radiance from the Celestial civilization drained their Princess’s Core with every passing day, cracking it and withering her strength as she valiantly bore the yoke of such responsibility. It was self-sacrifice. Petal intended to remove that yoke from Eirana’s shoulders, shatter it over her knee, and toss it at the very feet of the ancient Council, so that the Elders may yet quiver at the realization they no longer held sway over the to-be monarch.
But, as with all things, it would take time. Nothing was ever gained in a day, at least nothing of this scale, and so Petal put her mind back into focus as a new twang upon the air brought her attention back to the matter at hand. Another flick of her fox ears and the Royal floated daintily to almost two feet off the ground, her delicate fingers touching lightly to the Crystalline spire before her; Petal closed her eyes as she felt the hum run up the length of her limb and into the six jewels arrayed on her shoulder. The Foxnix’s voluminous hair - a constant breeze of starlight against a cyan-on-lilac backdrop - raised out almost horizontally as she gesticulated the information now lingering in her mind of newfound possibilities in her quest. Petal pulled her fingers back and crossed her arms beneath her chest, stroking along her chin as she murmured,
“Daring. Reckless. Perhaps, even unorthodox; but promising.”
A smile came to her lips as she hovered back up into the heights of her lab - eyes flicking to the side as she mused-
“Fate only knows we could use something more interesting here.”
