MIKA is... interesting. He's clearly at least modestly talented. Which by modern musical terms, means he's probably a genius compared to most of his peers. I used to really like his music a lot, ten years ago. But I have to admit, it is a tad bit gay. Even for me. And I listen to Freedom Call!
We Are Young/Kick Ass has to be my favourite song he's ever done so far. It kind of goes against the usual trappings of a MIKA pop song, it's not quite as femmy. And it's about something different. It's about being beaten up and wanting to fight back. It's about being the kid everyone picks on. It's about wanting to change the world, to make it better.
I can't help but love the conviction he sings with. Especially the verse:
When you fake a smile, and you think you're BETTER!!!
Conviction is all I ever ask for in a song, really. I want to feel someone's pain, I want the singer to bear their soul to me and take me on an emotional journey. I want a tour de force.
It's a great song when you're hurt, or when you have to run around a lot. It only plays at the end credits of Kick Ass. But it makes a much better song for The Caves of Androzani. Hence the jumper.
He's wearing the Fifth Doctor's red and black striped cricket jumper from season 21 of classic Doctor Who, because I've been religiously watching all the Fifth Doctor episodes again in chronological order (and listening to as many audios as I can afford to). MIKA's outfit in the video has a similar jumper, probably to make him look more nerdy, so why not?
I think if I was going to listen to MIKA again, I should have drawn something gayer... there's always next time.
As for Kick Ass itself, watching it is rather like watching a playthrough of Outlast 2. Too unpleasant for my tastes.
