Even as he grew taller, his legs shortened under his heavy belly, thickening like tree trunks braided with corded muscle. The last few scraps of shirt hanging onto his arms snapped as his biceps finished expanding and his shoulder plates rounded out. The only recognizable scrap of clothing left still on him was the waistband of his pants pinned to his side by one of the large spikes that had grown from the sides of his abdomen and part of his belt still draped across his back.
His ears shrank in towards the side of his head until they were flush with his skin, then disappeared entirely. His perceptions shifted; he could no longer hear in the way he once could, but he could still sense every sound around him as a series of vibrations in his skull and jaw. New instinctual awareness bubbling up under the surface of his mind translated each strange new impression.
A fiery sensation began to build in his stomach, lungs, and heart. Not painful or uncomfortable like heartburn, but intense simmering heat that simultaneously seemed to consume him from the inside out and imbue him with a sense of incredible power. Hot sulfurous steam puffed from his nostrils with every breath, even as his airways closed and shifted to re-route breathing through his mouth. Across his face and body his armored plates thickened and set into place, rough like pumice, the obsidian channels that flowed between them setting rock-hard, his claws and tail spikes taking on the keen edge of volcanic glass.
His head ridges pushed more and more prominently from his head, and for brief seconds at a time he felt as though he could feel the rock surrounding him, the power of the ancient gems and stones flashes of bright light in a sea of darkness, and then even the rock and earth itself and lending him the strength to change. As his mining helmet finally fell from his head ridges, it was as though he could finally see and instinctually understand the surrounding stone in a way he didn’t know was possible. The tunnel began to tremble, small rocks and gems skittering about the floor.
