The gem pulsed suddenly with white-hot heat and Phil threw it to the ground with a yelp, losing his grip on his pickaxe in his pain and surprise. Both clattered to the ground, but even after dropping the gem a strange heat flew jarringly up the bones and muscle of his arm, filling his chest and encasing his skin until he felt he was boiling in a fiery lake before traveling down the rest of his limbs to his fingers and toes. His face flushed hotly and began to redden, and he let out a wordless exclamation of confusion and burgeoning horror as the tunnel began to shrink around him.
No, wait – the tunnel wasn’t shrinking, he was growing.
His limbs and torso began to bulk out, filling with muscle, bones creaking and stretching as he slowly gained height and mass. He could feel his face, hands, and feet shifting and moving. Bone rearranged, moved, and twisted under skin that began to redden, harden, and split like plates of armor. Something pushed up from the top of his head, knocking his mining helmet askew even as his head grew too large for it to fit.
His fingers felt tight under his gloves and he could feel his nails expanding, and thickening. He stared at his hands in fascinated horror as his nails – claws now – pushed at the leather from underneath until it finally gave way with a sharp rrrip! His left hand felt crushed as it continued to swell and expand faster than the right, building painful pressure under the creaking leather glove. When he finally felt he could no longer stand it the material finally gave way and split open, tearing along weak lines in the leather. The skin underneath flushed red, starting at his massive claws and quickly travelling upward into his hand and forearm, which were broadening and flattening, strange geometric furrows deepening in his flesh. The last two fingers of his glove were pushed out of the way as his outermost fingers began to blur and shift like melted clay, merging into one.
Similar pressure began to build in his boots as his feet and legs added bulk. His toes felt odd in the boots, shifting, bones and muscle aching as they twisted together from five to three digits. He curled his toes as the pressure in his boots increased to excruciating levels and hunched his back as his gut and back expanded to push the limits of what his belt and shirt and pants could contain. Leather and canvas creaked ominously as they strained to hold in his new mass. Boot and shirt laces stretched, stretched more, and finally snapped with a series of snaps and twangs. His spine felt extended and stretched, and he struggled to sort out the strange new sensation of another limb as the flat spiked growth he could only imagine was a tail punched holes in the seat of his trousers. As his back hardened into strong plates of natural armor and small hard spikes pushed forth from his sides, the entire back of his shirt and pants split open with a massive ripping sound.
