Okay, so I was editing some Spyro episodes and there was a point at which I felt like editing in some custom images would help enhance the scene. Then I started making this little basic animation and... got a bit carried away. Here's a breakdown (link).
Frames 1, 6 and 9 (marked in blue) are the keyframes.
Frames 2 and 3 are redrawn copies of frame 1, used to get the shimmering effect in the beginning (known as boiling).
Frames 4, 5 and 8 are tweens.
Frame 7 is a copy of frame 6 with the head rotated slightly further forward for a pinch extra smoothness.
There are also three further frames which are copies of frame 9 (that is, the exact same drawing this time) but moved around and with different blur direction on the text.
I'm fairly certain this is my first time trying frame-by-frame animation. I've got some keyframed flash animations in my gallery some way back, and a couple of things which I guess technically qualify as "frame-by-frame animation", but they were simplest of the simple. They only consisted of tracing-the-previous-frame-and-adding-a-bit-more, and they didn't have any characters in them. So I would count this as the first proper one despite its simplicity.
I'm pretty proud of this, but it's probably rather amateurish what with the inconsistency of the hair between frames, and jerkiness of the movement. I didn't want to invest a week or more into this 5-second thing, so it's mostly animated on threes (i.e. 10fps), with two of the frames going by a bit quicker for the sake of smoothness. I also think the eyebrow doesn't quite move right, and his head gets a bit bigger and deforms slightly when he starts screaming. But I think it's pretty good for a first attempt!!! Especially considering how JANK my process was for this. I don't have any software where i can easily view frames as they go, so I had to draw each frame in Photoshop on its own layer, then save them as individual files, and upload them all to EZGIF.com and compile them into a GIF. It took a few attempts and I did it in parts (which was only possible because this image is so simple that the GIF compression had no visible effect on it). So all in all, I think it was a success for what it is. When I start my Illustration & Animation course at uni this September, I'll doubtless get more chances to get to grips with animation.
