"sampling like I'm at a BUFFET"
Sometimes I dick around on Acid (v5.0) and put stuff together, but I really have no clue what I'm doing. I have a rudimentary grasp of music theory and song structure, but not really enough to do anything worthwhile. Not to mention I get a good idea or two and don't really know how to wrap it up.
Above is an unfinished pile of techno/trance/dnb crap (some may choose to call it a song)... All I can think of is "it's going nowhere"- how do I make it go places?
What do you think of it? What could I change about it to make it listenable/enjoyable? Constructive critique is welcome.

firstly, i would say find a different bass. that one you have is dreadful in my opinion.
whatever instrument you got going (sounds keyboardy) is just all over the place. i usually see techno is pretty simple. chords and whatnot arent necessary in my opinion
it needs form. make it a bit longer. give an interesting intro (bait and hook). then put one musical idea in. then the main idea. then either a new musical idea or a development on the first one. then the main idea again. etc etc. just keep going back to the main idea. in my opinion techno sounds good when its repetitive but not too repetitive.
perhaps a vocal sample. pick something cool. you can make it sound roboty or whatever. female voices are always nice. it doesnt have to be singing but make it flow with the music. a good memorable vocal sample makes a song stick in your head in my opinion.
you can switch between things like bass+melody bass+vocal and vocal+melody. then maybe for a finale you can do it all at once as long as its not jumbled. that kind of variety sounds good while keeping things fairly simple and repetitive in my opinion.
if you couldnt tell im stressing the fact that this is my opinion. im no musical expert and i dont write much myself but i have taken some classes in appreciation and i know a smidge of theory. but im still fairly amateur so you can take my opinions to heart or not if you want
over all you have a good start though. if you decide to redo or reinvent this tune pm me the link incase i dont see it on the front page.

The main problem I have is that I have no sound samples to pick from. I would LOVE to find a different bass and other instruments. I have a couple of vocal samples that came with god knows what version of Acid, but they all sound like ass.
I'm sure it would help my creativity if I had better instruments. I did just buy a Yamaha keyboard, but trying to record a line-in off of it doesn't really work very well. Would you happen to know where I could find pre-made samples?

well, i'll keep my eye out (and do a quick search) for some premade vocal samples. but to be honest i think it would suit you much better to find some lines from various sources (movies, tv shows, interviews, anime, etc) and isolate them to use. i dont make music much but i usually get ideas for music and i find a lot of lines that would be cool sample. If you want I could lookup how to isolate vocals (i can already isolate music somewhat) so if you find something you like i can help pull it out of its original context
as for the bass. im sure theres a site out there with different kinds of basses and tones that you could program into your keyboard.

Program... keyboard...? Haha, just kidding. I don't think that's gonna be happening any time soon. I just picked up a Yamaha PSRE223 ("Entry-Level")
Now that I think about it, since I'm "pretty darn good" at editing in Acid (I have years of experience) I could just fuck around on my keyboard, line-in everything, and layer it all together when I'm done. It'll sound like a concerto even though I can't play the keyboard to save my life!

I thought that bass sound was pretty good. It made the piece a little more unique. You really did have a pretty good sound going there for the first 53 seconds; it wasn't until you mashed in those wacky chords that the whole thing started falling apart. But otherwise it's not that bad.
With a little more practice, you should be able to figure out what works and what doesn't. I think you're on your way.
