Lady Jana walked to a stand full of bows and picked up the smallest short bow from the stand. After a quick inspection, she tossed it to Aaron. He was taken by surprise, fumbling with the bow before managing a grip.
“All right, young one, we’ll be practicing without the arrow, first. Step up to the line,” the elder squirrel chieftain instructed, pointing at the shooting line. Aaron followed her directions, lining both footpaws against the line. “Don't be daft! You don't draw a bow facing forward. Let's see, you're holding the bow in your left paw, so place your left footpaw over the line, and your right one behind it. No! Not behind your other paw, behind the line! Widen your stance, place your footpaws shoulder width apart. That's better. Your body should be facing to the side of the target, and your shoulders should line up with it. Good. Turn your head down range, as far as you can. Now, extend your left arm towards the target, holding the bow upright. Don’t lock your elbow. Now grab the string with your right paw. Don’t use the thumb! Just your pointer, middle, and ring. Keep the thumb against the palm. Better. Now draw the string to your right cheek. Keep that draw elbow up! Right, hold that pose.”
She drew an arrow from her quiver and tapped Aaron's bow shoulder with the flat of the arrowhead. “Don't shrug! Relax your shoulders, they should be low and your arm should be lined up with your other shoulder. Yes, like that. Keep that elbow up, I said!” She tapped his drawing elbow with the arrowhead. “Now, look down range at your target. When I tell you to, release the string, but do not move any part of your body beside your paw. Ready? …. Loose!”
