I think a balance of both serious science fiction mixed with fantasy and elements of mysticism with maybe perhaps some timeless philosophical (minus any kind of contemporary modern day political overtone bullshit that nobody wants to hear any more of!) might work best, but under any circumstance I would prefer that the Walt Disney Corporation stay as far the fuck away from it as possible! They've been turning every I.P. that they touch into a far leftist agenda based vehicle lately, not to mention that they've literally become the copyright holders of the Weyland Corp (with the TCF media merger) over the past couple of years.
It seems like every time a major Hollywood studio does something 'like that!' ..we all know that it never goes well, especially when considering that the original subject matter is almost always horrifically sanitized simply to pander to kids.
Unless they make it a serious hard R rated or at the very least a very hard PG-13 rated drama/thriller it would most likely end up being chalked up as another hideous statistic of the same vein of fantasy novel/animation to live action adaptations such as the Scooby-Doo, Alvin, Charlotte's Web and Paddington movies, even though the 2010s Michael Bay take on The Ninja Turtles franchise, from what I've heard anyway, wasn't quite as awful as it could've been considering the set precedent.
As a live action film I couldn't see it working any way than being a serious R/PG-13 rated thriller.
Otherwise I think it should strictly only be filmed as an entirely 3D computer animated feature or in any other traditional animation format.
