Heh, Gizmo is a HUGE pain to take care of. He combines the worst aspects of having a dog, a cat, and a toddler.
I have to admit, I'm a big reptile lover myself. I'd highly recommend Leopard Geckos as a first reptile pet. They're easy-to-handle, easy to care for, and they're quite hardy. You also don't have to worry much about them making escape attempts.
