Through the 90's, I was a WW2- Re-enactor, and I carried a period correct Camera into the events. Sometimes I would make a sketch from my photos. Here is Dino Germano, as an Italian Bicycle trooper in North Africa for a North Africa 1942 event, wearing his Sahariana tunic and stuck his Mannlicher Carcano cavalry carbine in the dirt as he struck a pose for my camera. We had a Italian soldier in the Midwest, Rode around on a Breda Motorcycle that was made in 1939. And with his carcano carbine. Who ever 'Captured ' him, he'd spit on his carcano and he was your 'pet' for the battle. So many guys tried their damndest to capture him cause it ment you got motorcycle ridden about. Even the Germans tried to capture him once he was 'feral' and running about his bike. But usually the boys from 101 or 82nd captured him.
Yeah, it became a huge "Capture the Dago" when he would show up. He never fired his carcano cause he never had any blanks for it. But he used a 'Captured' Webley cause he had a source for .38 S&W blanks.
I also miss "Ivan the Terrible", A Russian immigrant who played both Soviet and American when he could. At Ft McCoy our unit was boxed in by Germans, Ivan jumped on a huge construction crane, actually started up the crane and would swing around the bucket, leaning out of the cab yelling "BOOM!! BOOM!!!" And "Is Secret Soviet Weapon! BOOM!!"
The Germans captured him, hauled him out before the bucket crane, and despite wearing an American uniform, he screamed "I DIE FOR STALIN!!! LONG LIVE STALIN!" The Germans just Firing Squad'ed him and he screamed out in Russian "Momma!! I LOVE YOU, DIE FASCIST PIGS IN THE NAME OF STALIN!" as he would rather dramatically spin around, clutching his chest and reach for the sky...then say "I die now!"
He also would loudly fart in the barracks and announce "ALARM! SOVIET GAS ATTACK!"
