This picture was taken down at the end of my street on my way home during an ice storm. I'm not sure when this happened but i know the owner of the vehicle and i know she's one of those cocky overconfident 4wd people who think that just because they have it, that they are invincible in all weather. Let it be known to all who don't already know that just because you have 4wd and new tires doesn't mean that it can save you from ALL road conditions especially ice. I have the extreme fortune of having a vehicle that has an overabundance of safety features like ABS, Traction control, and electronic stability control and even then i still heed mother natures wrath. Always remember, mother nature is a bitch and just when you think you've got her figured out she will pull the rug right out from under you or throw you a curveball you never expected. Even with all our technology and advancements in automotive science let us not forget that the greatest tool for being safe is your brain...........USE IT!!!

Lol i have a cobalt SS turbo that's american made and i had no problems getting around in this shit at all...........i really dont understand how people manage to do this but ........damn. Ive seen more 4WD vehicles in the ditches this year then anything else and its just like..........wtf........people are really getting to overconfident in these things ability to handle on snow and ice. I mean come on......i got FWD with wide ass all season tires and i manage to keep my nose clean.
It could be they've never been in an accident and yet they're old enough to not have the "new driver scares" so they just feel confident. But I know about the 4WD arrogance, I had quite a bit of it when I first got my Jeep. I see a lot of people every year in the ditches too. 4WD people just think their vehicles can handle it, regardless of their lack of proper experience.
your car is FWD but the majority of the weight is also resting on those drive tires allowing for more traction, as well as your alleged wide ass tires which i am guessing are no more than a 225/18, also depending on the temperature and how much they were driving. even with snow tires, all rubber gets hard after a certain temperature, i think its like 20 degrees or something around there, your cobalt is also lower to the ground and distributes the weight easier than said SUV with a high center of gravity, AWD its a most valuable asset in inclement weather conditions as can be proven with this video, http://gizmodo.com/5432117/subaru-w.....k-out-of-snow.
I drive a Subaru, not the STI that beats mustang GT's and pontiac GTO's..but the pretty base model, i've let the rear slide in the rain, its not a scary thing once you have felt it before and know how to counteract it.
As for the woman in the SUV...just plain stupidity, and im sure the overconfidence lies in the fact she was driving an SUV, a vehicle that can give a false sense of security which can be a very bad thing.
i also gotta say that chevy was not really thinking right making a FWD car with 260hp/260lb.ft its a bit excessive especially for the asking price

Nah i love my car its awesome. How many FWD cars do you know of that can beat some AWD cars on a closed circut course as well as a lot of other high end machines that cost almost double its price. The traction control and electronic stability control have been invaluable for both winter season's ive had it so far. Yeah chevy may have made the mistake of making it FWD instead of AWD or even RWD but they did the math and the work and came out with a beautiful machine anyways
also not to disrespect FWD cars. I used to own an 08 Lancer GTS which was front drive and i'll admit it was a fun little bitch while it lasted, but alas the major flaw of all FWD cars is their drive wheels are also the steering wheels, and once traction is lost it can be hard to gain control again.
I don't know about there, but here, the thrick to driving in snow is to slow down, go cautiously, and break GENTLY about 3 times sooner than you would normally, if not more. Heck, if you can, you let the transmission do all the work and slow the vehicle down as much as possible.
At least this crash would have been easy to recover. Simply brace the tow truck, lean in with the stinger, secure, and let the hydrolics pull her out.
