The Dataverse (theme)
A sprawling computer network occupying a college university somewhere in the world. It has the appearance of a massive metropolitan city. Thousands of programs occupy the Dataverse and perform jobs like searching databases, performing upkeep or completing batch jobs. The campus is connected to the internet so other programs from other systems can visit via the Information Highway.
Programs
The hundreds of processes that store data and perform calculations in the Dataverse. They come in all shapes and sizes ranging from humanoid to animal-like. The one thing they share in common is their muted coloration to signify they are safe programs.
Whitebox
One of the most talented (and unconventional) repair programs in the Dataverse. She works at the local quarantine hospital and specializes in removing corruption from programs. She's kind and eager to help but her methodology often scares her patients away from check-ups.
Instead of performing unit tests, Whitebox swallows her patients whole and decompiles them down to their basic code. Once she's finished refactoring their bugs after a few hours, she recompiles them and sends them on their way.
Daemon (theme)
Gluttonous, alcoholic and highly irritable, Daemon has worked in the Dataverse since it went online in the early 70s. They began life as a Unix debugger but have been patched so many times that their function is now a mystery. As a result of being updated for decades, they have become corrupted beyond recognition. They carry latent glitchiness wherever they go and are considered an outcast in the Dataverse. They live in a run-down apartment complex where they hold down whatever odd job they signed up for that week.
As a result of their glitchiness, Daemon is highly resistant to corruption and can even bend it to their will. They are incredibly elastic and have the ability to gorge themselves on massive amounts of data before compressing it down. They can transform at will but getting them to change back is a different story...
Roe
A tiny subprocess that lives inside Daemon. It creates a backup of Daemon every 20 minutes and restores them if they are mortally wounded. It developed a small amount of sentience over time.
Bloatware
A shady businessprogram that comes from the bad sector of town. They deal in adware, toolbars or whatever they can get suckers to sign up for. Their programs are just barely legal so they are constantly on thin ice with Antivirus. They wanted to be a clothing designer but they love the thrill of the con so it has become their life's passion. They are somewhat effeminate and highly suave in their dealings.
While Bloatware's dealings are legal, their methods are not: the tip of their tail has a dangerous digital payload attached to it. The moment they fool programs to sign, they trust their tail into them like a stinger and pump them up with adware. Bloatware often hides this stinger under their various disguises they wear. It is rarely ever seen.
Viruses
Malicious processes that have infected the Dataverse. Viruses perform all manner of mischief ranging from harmless party tricks to destructive rampages that delete dozens of programs. They come in all sorts of twisted and nightmarish shapes, often resembling monsters from folklore. They are easy to spot by their bright coloration.

Glad you found it interesting! Programs and viruses usually keep the same amount of corruption their entire lives, with some rare exceptions like Daemon. Viruses carry a latent corruption with them that operates like radioactivity and can delete programs if they linger around too long.
so viruses in this universe are much more overt then viruses in real life, which more than anything try to be as discrete as possible, and only reveal themselves once it's far too late for the system.
though, do viruses like that exist in this world? those that try to masquerade as grey programs? in fact are they purposely created? or are more or less a natural occurrence in this world?

I'm planning on doing more with Bloatware at some point, but there's also this pic by ~Argentite and a great story done by ~wheredeer!
