To visualize the black hole they put the various equations into a computer simulation and that's what they ended up getting. It actually surprised the consulting physicist because they hadn't expected to see the accretion disk bending around the black hole like that (both top and bottom are the disk on the other side, with different distortions). But once they saw it they realized it had to be right and what would happen. So they actually advanced scientific understanding with that movie!
