TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Well, yes, but like I said to
Blackmist-Squamata, we really don't know anything about the rabbit character at all, other than by his actions and we're only seeing these in relation to a character we've come to care for and know a lot about. From the rabbit's perspective all he sees is this random pine marten wandering in.

Rabbit's probably lost many of their kin and friends to carnivores and omnivores in their lifetime and learned never to trust them. Especially mustelids since they've been known to fake injury, illness, or just plain odd behavior in order to make prey creatures stop and let them get closer while they wonder what the heck is up with that weasel.
Cornered rabbits can be NASTY and quite lethal with their digging claws and teeth alone -- give one a spear? Hoo boy. :B
And now their squirrel friend is essentially leading a predator straight into their warren just because of something they were holding, that very well could have been stolen from one of theirs he'd killed and eaten. As far as rabbit's concerned, there's still no reason to trust Rask. Hemlock (I think that's the rabbit's name?) will defer to Oren's judgement... but until then? They're ready to act in case "harmless weasel" is just an act, and to defend their kith and kin.

/Insert Ewok village music here...
So I keep having this thought kick around in the back of my head, bear with me here;
Most of the characters this far have had names like:
Rask
Quanaq
Tama
Cree
(Which let me be honest here, as someone who's really bad at naming shit for some reason those are all pretty solid primitive animal people names.)
But then there's Oren and mention of a Sibyl.
Those both have fucking centuries of etymology behind them and make about as much sense in this setting to me as having the next new character being a mouse or something randomly named Bob.
Second:
This enclave here has not only tamed fire they've also managed BRONZE (!!!) weapons, skipping right over the wood, stone and obsidian portions of the proverbial tech-tree.
With all of this in mind, I'm going to continue my tradition of making wacky off-the-wall probably wrong predictions and say:
We're going to come around the bend, see what is obviously a crashed spacecraft, and Oren will turn out to be a human who's got the full-on Charleston Heston in Planet of the Apes look with an unkempt beard, tattered Space Explorer(TM) outfit and be hobbling around on a gimpy leg that broke in the crash and didn't heal right.
He'll be doing things like trying to teach them, "Don't eat all the walnuts from that tree now, stick some in the dirt in sunny places and eventually you will have many walnuts!" and be feverishly scribbling things on a cliff face with a piece of charcoal.
EDIT: Done me a grammar.

It could be copper, instead of bronze. Copper is very easy to work with, metallurgically speaking, and will hold a decent enough edge. Alloying bronze is something that takes a BIT more know-how and specialized forgework. x3;
... That said, it's probably a fairly new, or at least very well-maintained, copper point on that spear if it is copper. It's got no greenish-blue patina. :B

Now, now, there's no need to go all Däniken this early in the story XD
Also the difference in names can easily be attributed to difference in languages, clearly the predators speak a different tongue than the herbivores and every name means "something" in their respective language of origin.

Well, I did say I'm probably wrong. It's just the funny thought I have kicking around in the back of my mind.
I mean, just imagine it!
Imagine...

Imagine...
As far as the wolves' naming conventions in particular, I think you'd be fairly disappointed in the truth behind it... ;]
Rask and Quanaq had different names originally, but as the story progressed as I was writing it, names became something like a regional dialect. For instance, all the animals that originated in the valley of the comic have directly translatable names with a meaning in English (Hemlock, Sprig, Egg) where as Rask is from somewhere else, so his name doesn't have a readily available 'English' correspondent. It isn't a hard rule for everyone though, just something I've kept in the back of my mind.
I love reading your predictions for the story!
