Some Avatar fan art. :D Avatar has AMAZING creature design, and I want to draw most of the movie critters. Don't know if I actually will, but they're certainly all interesting enough for me to want to.
This is just a sketch, and the drawing is just a basic exercise in figuring out what bits of anatomy go where. Harder than one might think, given how hard it is to find decent reference art of these things. Officially I can only find three images, all of them stills from the movie, none of them clearly showing all six limbs. And I don't trust the photos of the toy, they may have things wrong.
Anyhow! I'll probably ink this, and maybe even color it, and when I'm done with that then I'll draw a more dynamic action pose, rather than this somewhat bland side view.

Just back from seeing it myself now! Really loved it. I enjoyed the storytelling and all, but as you say, it's the richness of the world and the creatures and the ecology that will probably stick with me the longest. The creatures were beautiful, and the similarities they shared and the way things felt like they all fit together naturally was brilliant. You really get the feeling they spent a lot of time thinking about them all, not just tossing various fangly beasties on screen because somebody thought they looked cool.
Great work on this guy, I'd love to see what else you end up doing from Avatar. ^^

Yeah, I would say the visual aspects are the strongest part of the movie, both the creature/plant/world design, and the cinematography. The characters were a distant second, and the story, although still quite decent, third.
I'm probably going to do a banshee or two, and I want to do the little wolflike things and maybe the direhorses. First I've got to get this guy right though. :D
