Ancel through the ages, by Kiguri
Here's the finished redesign by the wonderful
Kiguri
Ancel was your average gnoll archer... though... not completely average, for she knew magic. Also: She liked going in towns and cities and talk with the people there. Sure, she was a bit... acid and had one of those tongues that rarely ever got a decent word out... but we was loyal to her friends and always tried to do "the good things".
The problem arose when she heard of "The Installation". It seemed a nightmarish place. All tiled white and blue. Filled with mechanical abominations that attacked people scuttling around on spider-like mechanical feet.
Worst of all: It affected the people above. It made them act like mind-controlled machines even though they still were, by all accounts, living things. There seemed to be only one way to stop this... Play the machine's game.
Battered and severely hurt. Ancel was the only one to reach the end of the last level of the Installation. She entered the control room to shut it down.
Welcome, our lovely patrons and supporters of this social experiment! For long years one question has troubled researchers and wizards alike. Why people explore dungeons? What is the driving force behind all this? We have set out to create the perfect dungeon! You can try all sorts of combinations, and try and re-try it to your own pleasing and satisfaction. Only the first level will stay fixed, all other levels will reshape themselves to allow you to try anything you wish to try and allow you to face any challenge you can face! It might be interesting or it might be brutal, it all depends on your approach! But everything can be defeated and the challenge never ends. It goes on and on my friends. Can you make it to level 10? Will you try and grind your way, honing your skills or will you boulder through it sure of your abilities? This first level will just be a demo of what you will find, in it there will be just cardboard and papier mache stuff, but don't worry, the real deal will be below this. Allow us to show you the map of this first level, you can ask anything to our dear guide, Ancel, she was the first to beat the 10 levels. A cloned brain of hers resides in this warforged. She will be happy to answer any question you want. SERVING YOU IS HER ONLY JOY™. Use her however you like. She can heal you and she can help you fight. Or, you know, discard her. It's just a cloned brain after all, we can make so many.
After 30 years, Ancel finally has a body of her own back. Mostly, at least. She's going after whomever created the installation. She has names. She wants revenge.

So... Some organisation installed a high tech leasure park emulating an RPG dungeon on a primitive planet but something went wrong and they left.
OR...
This was a large colony where they installed a leasure park modelled after an RPG dungeon. Something went horribly wrong and everyone got knocked back into the stone age (as they say) forgetting they actually come from an advanced society. What they call "magic" is actually tech stuff they don't understand and the dungeon is the only untouched relic from that era.

the game is ongoing so i cannot reveal anything here buuut you're wong on every guess. It's a D&D game, so usual "more or less what we can do, but with magic" the dungeon is magic with a tech-y feel (rather tacky at that) and it's extremely blunt in declaring openly what it is doing, what it is hiding is the purpose, all that they know is that whomever found out about why the installation exists... surrendered themselves into work for it. and since the installation uses mind conyrol, illusions and in general ticks down eeeeeverything from the "evil that must be stopped" list... everybody wants to know why it still exists and 4he government is not stopping it.
Wait, wait, wait. The brain in the warforged body is cloned? Then were is the original?
Why hasn't she shut down the Installation?
If she leaves and the installation is not shut down, won't it just clone her brain again and create a new warforged body?
And are the creators prepared to face a warforged that has the training to overcome their Dungeon?
