How long could one say that it's been? A thousand years? A hundred thousand? A million? After a long eternal life, individual years and clusters of ages cease to matter. He knew his purpose and was following it now, as ever he had since he had lived long enough to obtain the strength.
Another dying planet called out to him as his massive form moved through space, carried on wings that themselves held what may have been an entire universe inside of his form. As a reaper dragon, this was the ultimate goal of his existence, finding dying planets whose surviving life forms were struggling to live, and granting them a mercy mandated by the divine authorities higher than even him.
His massive form coming upon the planet, darkness spreading through the clouds and temperatures rapidly dropping as his back came to the nearby sun, his claws extended out to grip the planet. He had done this before, he had to learn the hard ways on how to go about seeing to the destruction of a world in a safe and painless way for the lifeforms on it. Magic aligning his claws, he placed one firmly into the crust of the dying world, in a single motion pulling all remaining life with souls free, and absorbing them into his body. As it was when he was a younger dragon, he never lost sight of his justice, the souls he devoured would be judged, the innocent free to pass on to the next life, the irredeemable would be passed on forcefully to their own infernal justice, while those who had hopes of redemption could remain within his body to make up for their misdeeds.
Thinking life now faded from the world, he no longer needed to be gentle and opened his maw, biting down hard and feeling the rock and crust crush and shatter, devouring this world, as well as all of its flora and non-sentient fauna to further fuel his form. Once he felt the meal settle he exhaled a mist of magical energies, seeding the magic for the gods to create a new life-bearing world from the ruins of the old one. And with his deed done, he turned and flapped his wings, continuing his long and eternal purpose.
In his cave, the dragon's eyes snapped awake with a bit of urgency to them, looking around. Still the same cave, still the same blue sky peeking outside of the entrance, still the same friend cuddled up to his side using him as a bed. A wistful sigh escaping his lips as he laid his head back down to try to fall back asleep. One day in the future - so far flung it was a long time even from an immortal's perspective - he'd be that divine, world-devouring beast. But for now, he still had a youth to enjoy.
This was an absolutely gorgeous YCH that I snagged from Elkaart, an artist I found recently who does excellent dragons.
While I've always been a bit indifferent on mega-micro/macro for various reasons and tend to not care about the fetishistic side of it (normal size-difference is a different beast, since Vel's true size is still huge), this piece served well as a theoretical "endgame" for Vel's existence, when he moves on from just being a herald of the end of his world, to being a creature that aids in the cycles of death and rebirth on a universal scale, and never stops growing in the process. Plus, well, with all his space aspects, getting art of him in a spacescape is something that I absolutely need to get a lot more of.
I admit I like the idea of thinking to various characters' futures, similar endgame-themed commissions might pop up later on, as I find the ideas for them.
