Most of the following is headcanon.
Of all the creatures to dwell in Hyrule (and the rest of the world), few are as curious as the Minish. They are most noted for being remarkably mouse-like, especially in height. Minish never grow taller than a few inches high. A general rule of thumb? Look at your own thumb--if you were a Minish, that's how small you would be. The average adult is a mere two and a half inches tall.
A Minish's body is very much geared towards climbing, with strong, stocky legs at the base and comparatively long arms. Their flat, flexible tails are used for balance and they feature long, dextrous toes for grip. It should not be overlooked that a Minish is, proportionally, much stronger because of their size. They are effectively unburdened by their own weight and can travel and climb proportionally farther than a Hylian can without tiring, and can also carry about double their weight. In addition, they are somewhat more resilient than they appear, and their long ears give them heightened reflexes and animal-like senses.
Because they are much, much smaller than the next-smallest sentient creatures of Hyrule (likely the Koroks or Deku), their relationship with the rest of society is a little... complex. In the past, the Minish did not integrate with other societies, and as a result the general public either did not believe they existed, or believed they were invisible to adults. The truth is that they kept themselves hidden, and either lived in appropriately-sized settlements away from Hylian towns, or within the walls of Hylian buildings. As their presence has become more commonly-known, "Town Minish" have been regarded by some as vermin because they "borrow" from Hylians.
The Minish have boundless energy and enthusiasm, and excel at creative endeavors. What they lack in physical strength, they make up for in effort, and on occasion this earns individuals places in society with larger folk. They are adept with magic and find it natural to learn, however their magic seems to be different from that of fairies. This and other historical evidence would seem to suggest the Minish originally came here from another dimension where the world is more to scale with their size. If this is true, it is a mystery why they should be so physiologically well-equipped for living in a world much larger than themselves.
A Minish matures at roughly the same rate as Hylians and Humans do with an only slightly longer average lifespan. Their diets vary depending on where they live and who they live around. Their population is spread far and wide, probably further and wider than has been reported, and as such they have been present for untold numbers of generations, comparable only to the Hylians and Gorons. Biologists and cultural scientists commonly believe that the species would withstand nearly any disaster, or to be more blunt, that they would be "impossible to get rid of."
It'd be fair to say I have an obsession with these guys. They only appeared in one Zelda game from 14? years ago but they're my favorite. As you can see I've spent a lot of time thinking about them and building more lore for how they would stand up to a close look at how they live. I'd love to see 'em again
As always, Rinori, Maribelle and Corrine belong to Geistault. Figaro is mine. Sam is me. Hi!
