Years ago I had a couple of dreams that involved an organization called the "Infinity Legion". It is a vast, very vast, military force that fights in innumberable places in the infinite Multiverse. Their tech varies from Stone age to "magic" futuristic. I have worked, off and on, on stories involving their actions over the years. Almost every story begins with a part of an "in briefing" that new members get.
This story involves a besieged city in a furry world where magic is "in effect". Things aren't looking good for those in the city until the appearance of some unusual looking "dragons".

"Subcontracting"
"There are times that the Infinity Legion will 'contract out' a mission to nonLegion units. Of course, the receivers of these tasks are unaware that they are under 'contract'."
In his writing room a silver furred male anthro rabbit sits at a writing table. Opening the large volume on that table, he dips his metal tipped quill in the nearby ink pot and begins writing on the blank page.
"Today is the 26th day of the season of Warmth. This is, also, the third anniversary of the end of the Great Siege of the City. Even now I hear the sounds of celebration of that event drifting through the windows. I have no doubt that the tale of how that siege was broken will told innumerable times this day and eve. Most of those tellings will have a great amount of truth in them, mixed with more than a few embellishments. Like other Great Events this one, over time, will grow to be a Legend, a tale that is more myth than truth. For this reason I put down in Official Record what I saw that gloomy, overcast day three years ago so that those who are born after our time will have facts to consult. In this tome I, Mattao Silverfur, give as true a telling as I can."
"I was apprentice to Jaycar Fendra, a sheep, who was one of the City's scribe Archivers when the Army of Evil attacked our kingdom. The antilife wizards of the Dark Lands had used their terrible magics to turn captives into horribly twisted and extremely dangerous battle minions. Add to that the monsterous war beasts created to haul their siege towers and to act as battle creatures as well. One alone could destroy a large group of soldiers and cavalry before being brought down.
Our army fought a retreating battle across the land until they got to the City. With food and water that would last us many months and walls thicker then the enemy's war beasts were long we stood a very good chance of holding until the cold of winter arrived. If we could do that the odds were quite good that the enemy would have to retreat and start over the next year or stay and have their ranks diminished by the cruelties of the winter.
In the course of the siege we saw an absolutely huge battering ram be pulled towards the main gates. Even with all the Enemy had we knew that they could not bring it bare effectively unless the catapultes and heated oil shooters were disabled, something our opponents had not been able to do. The Enemy knew this so why was it there?
"They have something," my Master said. "I don't know what but they do."
The late morning of that 26th day of Warmth saw his statement born out. We had been informed that there were major movements going on in the enemy ranks early that morn so my Master and I stood on the highest tower that day. There, we could see everything. And with our Enhanced and Far Vision googles we could see things in great detail up to five miles away. We were documenting the movements of the enemy troops and siege engines when, from the overcast sky to the East, we saw a large winged form descend from the cloud bottom. It was heading straight for the City.
"The Great Drake!" my Master exclaimed.
The words sent a chill through me! Many were the tales of this creature! They told of its boundless strength and power, and of its equally ferocious fighting abilities. It inhabited the high mountains over a full turn of seasons of horse travel away. It was said that it took no interest in the affairs of mortals...until now.
Coming to the upper walls above the gates this serpentine beast clawed at the war engines there, causing much damage to them. The oil sprayers had no effect on it and the catapults could not be brought to bare quickly enough to score hits on it. Arrows and spears fired by the ferret archers were totally useless and few lion and wolf warriors who closed to use their swords survived to tell the tale. Then, we saw the battering ram moving towards the gates.
"They get through them they'll be able to get through the second set of gates as well," Master Fendra said. "Then that is the end of us."
I was amazed at how calm he was. We had Doom staring us square in the face and he acted as though it were a everyday event!
As the enemy rolled that battering ram closer and closer my ears detected a noise. It had the properites of the sound one hears as bees drone from flower to flower. The noise became louder and I looked up to try and find its source. That's when they appeared. In groups of four those that made that droning dropped from the underside of the overcast. They had long (More then 28 *cubits but less then 32 cubits.) straight bodies (Averaging 3 to 4 cubits in span.) to which were set wings (Spanning at least 29 cubits but less then 33 cubits.), at the middle of their length, that were at right angles in relationship to the long axis of their bodies. The wings did not...flap, though I did see small movements at the trailing edges from time to time. At the tail of the body was a smaller, shorter (Ten to eleven cubits in span.), pair of wings with one vertical fan at the end of each of these. The trailing edges of the wings and fins, at times, moved as well. Between the two pairs of wings were two elongated...'blisters', one set on the upper left side and the other on the upper right side of the body. It was from these blisters that the sound came. As they neared I called on the magics in my googles to give me a closer and better view of these strange flying creatures. Their coloring was a mottled dark green. On the underside of their wings I sighted a number of small, elongated objects, some green and tan. Other objects, looking like thick bodied, finned arrows(?) were a brillant white in color. Very, very odd creatures indeed! In all we counted no less then 36 of these 'dwarf drakes'.
The Great Drake roared in outraged fury at the intrusion of the dwarf drakes. Launching itself off the walls it flapped its wings furiously to get height to fight these intruders. We felt sorry for the dwarf drakes for they were barely one eighth the size of the Drake. One set of four saw the creature coming and turned into it, flying headlong into battle. As they closed two of the small drakes peeled off to one side leaving only their two mates to battle that monster. They got closer and closer, then, the lead dwarf drake...'breathed'. It wasn't much, just a thin plume, from the lower nose, of very light gray smoke, followed by a sound that was similar to that of ripping cloth, that lasted barely two heartbeats. Even with our Enhanced Vision neither my Master nor I saw what it was that this drake spat out but the results were striking! Pieces of the head of the Great Drake were torn, shreaded away! The scream of pain it uttered was deafening! The second dwarf breathed and hit the root area of the Drake's left wing and sheared it off! In less then ten heartbeats the greatest, most fearsome creature known to us was plummeting to its death on the ground! To say I, and many others, were dumbfounded would be a serious understatement!
In the meantime, the other drakes had not been idle. They circled the perimeter of the City, as if taking stock of things. Four came low, just barely above the height of our walls, and engaged the force moving the battering ram. Their breath weapons wrecked terrible havok on the beasts and minions alike! In a meer two attacks that engine of war came to a standstill. Others attacked the forces of the enemy that surrounded the City. Here they not only used the breath weapons in their noses but other weapons that nestled beneath their wings. A number of streaks (Thinner versions of the white "arrows" the hung under those wings.) of fire shot from some of the objects in the wings. These were launched at the massed ranks of minions. I saw the forward ends of these fire propelled arrows explode some 200 to 220 paces** from the Dark ranks (Again, neither of us saw what was...'fired' from those tips.). The effect left me both fascinated and horrified! Great masses of minions fell like ripe grain stalks before the sharpest of reaping sickles! We found countless very sharp tiny metal darts in these areas and, on to this day, still turn them up. Other weapons, those thick white colored "arrows" (I Swear that I saw a small crystal dome on the front tips of each of them!), were launched, unerringly, at the heads of the mammoth war beasts. When they hit the beast's head would literally explode! In their final attacks these drakes dropped objects from their wings that ignited into huge sheets and balls of fire some 8 to 10 paces above the ground, enveloping hundreds of minions each time. And always, always, that ripping sound that told me that one or more of these drakes was breathing its favorite weapon once more.
The Army of Evil broke! The survivors, unable to deal with the slaughter of their numbers, ran in terror from the field. If we had not witnessed it ourselves we would not have believed it! In about the time it took to prepare the noon meal one of the greatest armys in known memory had been torn to pieces!
The stiff winged drakes circled the City as if they were being sure that our Enemy was retreating. When it was apparent that they were the drakes changed their flight pattern and did something that to this day I'm not sure as to the why of.
One by one our winged saviors flew close by the tower that Master Fendra and I stood upon. They passed by at a height that had their upper bodies even with the top of the tower. Now, clearly, we could see that there was a crystal 'hump' on the top of these creatures set several cubits back from the nose. I saw movement inside. After several had flown by I was able to get my googles "set" right to get a clear view inside those humps. I realized two things. One was that these drakes each had a rider of some type within them. And, two, the movements were of these riders using their right arm and hand to render some type of a salute. As more went by I gleened more details of the riders. They had uniformly sized, mostly white colored (Some with some type of symbol or symbols [Heraldic?] on the top right or top left side, sometimes on both.), bulbous shaped helmets(?) that completely encased their heads on the sides and back down to their mid neck. Across the upper front of those helmets(?) was some kind of...visor(?) that had a smokey gray color; no eye slits visible. On some they wore a kind of mask(?) over where their nose, mouth, and chin were that had the look of some of the gray colored rubber. Others had that mask hanging off to one side of their helmet(?). It was from these riders I gained a better vision of their faces. No muzzle or fur did they have, just a flat expanse from their chins to just below where our eyes would be. That expanse was broken only by what I presume was a mouth (About three ***digits wide, set horizontally a couple of digits above the chin) and a verticle nose(?) "ridge" not quite three above the mouth. Presuming that they were seated within that "hump" each rider averaged 3 and a half cubits, give or take a few digits, in height.
After their flyby they formed up into their groups of four, gained height and disappearred into the overcast. All that was left was the droning sound and soon that too was no more."
"Nellis AFB, Nevada, USA"
"Where the hell were you guys?!" exclaimed the angry col. as the last of the parked A-10 "Warthogs" shut down their engines "You go out for a mass live fire run and disappear! Then come back with your weapons racks and guns empty and I KNOW for a fact that none of you got to the firing range!"
The major in command of the flight held up his video data storage unit.
"Sir. Watch our videos and I think they'll answer your questions," he said.
