It was a good question either way.
"Is this where you've been hanging out?" Latti asked. She was doing a very good job of sounding judgemental, which...
"... Latti, what are you doing at the out-city gambling loop?" ... was something Yhelm felt entitled to be, too.
"Ummmmmmm. Okay. Sometimes I like to throw at the chasers. I never take more money than I'm willing to lose. It's a holiday. Why are you here!?"
"I, uh, work here," Yhelm said, which was as close as she could come to lying without actually doing it.
"You work here? At the raceloop? And what are you, food vendor?" Latti didn't think Yhelm was a food vendor. She was clearly not a food vendor. It was a desperate attempt to give her an out.
Yhelm didn't take it. "I'm working security. It's a holiday. Spring Fleet gets busy."
"You're a bouncer at a gambling loop."
"And you're gambling at the gambling loop."
Latti looked away, embarrassed. Yhelm took it as an excuse to go back to scanning the crowd. It really was a holiday. Spring Fleet meant in an hour everyone here would be drunk, and an hour after that, at least one fight would absolutely break out. Madrigal said last year they worked this, someone got stabbed. What was Latti doing here. This part of the out-city wasn't respectable. It wasn't even especially safe. There was a reason guild enforcers were everywhere today. What was Latti doing here? Why did she have to come here? Why did Latti have to see her like this?
"I won't tell mom about you, if you don't tell her about me," Latti finally said.
"Mom isn't very interested in talking to me, so whatever," Yhelm said. "I won't mention it, though."
"Okay. It's. It's good to see you again? We've missed you."
Damnit. "Don't bet on the sixth chase. It's rigged."
"... oh."
"I'm not. I'm not going to tell you who will win, but. If you bet on that race, you'll lose your money. So just don't for that one."
"... okay. I. You." Latti hesitated. It was the same cautious, fidgety, hovering panic Yhelm remembered in Latti every time she started on something. Before playing the piano, before sewing, before climbing a tree, it was that same nervous indecision she'd always had. "You. You look. You look thirsty, Yhelm, do you want me to get you something to drink?"
"I'd, appreciate that. Thank you."

look normally her tail is down, and you dont see it ok it's rude to call attention to it
ok
nudity isn't really taboo but you shouldn't draw attention to it either on yourself or someone else ok
all languages in the setting are basically dialects of the same language but after thousands of years they have deviated hard from one another. it is the second most common dialect, which basically sounds almost intelligible but isn't. since this is one of the biggest cities in the world you put it in both languages especially when the message is "keep out this is where the money is and we will kill you"

they can go on 2 legs or 4 at will so a lot of times you have clothes that work in both and hers is mostly made for standing up but walking on all fours is a lot more comfortable and quicker for them than going on their hinds
latti is a free person and yhelm is an adversary. they can interbreed but the child is always either a free person or an adversary with no blending. they have the same mother but yhelm's father is an issue their mom doesn't like to talk about.
