Its also interesting to note in very few of the classic shorts does Tom try to eat Jerry, the only ones I can think of are Mouse Trouble and Mouse friday(where Tom was specifically a starving castaway). Mouse In Manhattan even had Jerry meet significantly more menacing and less anthropomorphic cats in the city who tried to eat him.
