In 1986, Governor John Carlin signed a bill making the ornate box turtle the state reptile of Kansas.
I found this one while out bicycling two weekends ago. Unfortunately, I failed to take my camera along on that ride and had to settle for a cell phone picture. This turtle was a bit camera shy and I had to wait a while to even get a head shot. The shell was approximately 5 inches across by 6 inches long - a decent size.

US states choose all kinds of things to serve as official state symbols. Like many states, Kansas has a state tree (plains cottonwood). It also has a state amphibian (barred tiger salamander), insect (western honey bee), grass (little bluestem), even a state soil (Harney silt loam) if you can believe that!
