Early 1990's and SOO line 4104's paint still is fresh and shiny. The SOO had several of these heavily rebuilt locomotives called a Ziegler GP15C. One of this locomotives siblings was destroyed in a rather spectacular run-away train incident in Saint Paul's Pigs Eye yard about a decade ago.
This would be the last SOO paint scheme before they were fully absorbed into the CP.
Today, according to http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/21000.htm this locomotive is on the Red River Valley RR and while the paint is different, the number is the same.
Note the open from cab door to allow more air through, this was prior to air conditioning becoming more common on locomotives.
Built by EMD as NYC GP9 #5989 Serial Number : 21002 (3/1956), renumbered to NYC #7389, to PC #7389, then to CR #7389. Acquired by Generation II Locomotives and rebuilt with a 1,500 Hp. Caterpillar 3512 engine (3/1991), sold to SOO Line and renumbered to SOO #4104. Sold to Generation II Locomotives (4/1999).
Originally shot on Kodak Gold 400ASA with a non-descript Kodak 'point and shoot'. Then re-shot RAW at 100ASA. Colour curves were used in Photoshop to correct negative orange cast and then inverted. Then brought into Aperture for further tweaks.

It was a nice plainly stated scheme. I rather like one main solid colour for engines, be it BN with it's cascade green (with black), Milwaukee Road with it's orange (with black), the Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern with it's blue and simple pinstripe and so on and so fourth.
Sadly I don't care for the BNSF's excessively busy paint, it'd prefer something closer to the green and orange of the GN.
Interesting about what you said about the cab. What was your preference, the traditional AAR locomotive control stand or the 'desktop' style controls.

I don't recall exactly, but 4102 pretty much had it's whole long hood sheered off. The injuries were mostly to the employees who were in the yard tower which was hit and collapsed in the accident.
If i recall correctly a kinked trainline hose caused most of the train to not respond to a brake reduction and when the train came down the heavy grade into the river valley there just wasn't any way to stop it. I'm not sure what data the F.R.E.D. was giving the crew but it must not have caused them any concern when they left Northtown.
