at the end of last year i did this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/29907920/ and the entire time i was doing it, i was trying to do something different than i usually saw redesigns of the mane six to look... and i don't like a few of them for it lmao rarity was the one i was the least happy with and i've been considering redoing the most, so i finally did it! i was in the mood to do some next gens based on my redesigns, but... considering who i was going to make a next gen for, i really didn't want to use the rarity design i had as one of the parents. i ended up making a sweetie belle to go along with her! i'm not used to the very specific look of the show, so using bases for this threw me off a bit lmao

some background to my ideas: when i would think about what i'd want rarity to look like i would always picture a darker coat and lighter hair, deep colors ranging in royal purples, blues, and golds. my rarity has a deep, muted navy blue coat with pale patches similar in hue to the navy and a long, pale gold blonde mane + tail; the gold to compliment the warmer navy i used! for sweetie belle, i wanted to reflect another set of genes- in the show their parents have white and pink coats respectively and i figure it's similar here, one having a mostly white coat while the other has a mostly cool purple coat- possibly in the pastels! i based their coat patterns on the gypsy vanner horse for how regal they look if i'm being honest! i love the patterns they can have and how soft their manes look- plus the fur tufts around their hooves matching my headcanon for unicorns certainly doesn't hurt!

as for lore, i like to think that my rarity and sweetie belle have some mule in their ancestry, the attributes of this mostly out of the gene system except for every few generations a foal is likely to be born with abnormally long ears, a more rounded snout, or clunkier hooves. the tail is usually unnoticed in a family full of mostly unicorns, so while that gene has probably fallen down as well on the occasion, it isn't notable. this usually isn't a problem for their ponyville centric family, however doing business in canterlot does lend to meeting with more rude individuals. nopony really bothers rarity to her face about her possible mule ancestry since the first few moons when she opened up shop however, it may have something to do with the fact that the last pony who did ended up too worried about a certain extramarital affair leaking to the press than who miss rarity may have descended from.
