Yeah--we used to watch "Top Gear" back before Jeremy had his melt-down, and thought it was hilarious.
Fred has a classic Lotus automobile, and in it he has a driving helmet with THE STIG written on it. When Kathy's friend Helen asked him about it, Fred casually replied, "Oh, it's just a school nickname--" as he peeled rubber leaving the curb in the Lotus.
The source of the nickname is that he was such a prig that his schoolmates called him "The Stick"--as in, that guy's got a stick up his a$$. Eventually "Stick" got slurred into "Stig."
