i don't know exactly what the black watch is, but i do wonder how anyone could be a part of the country's military and even think they could get away with stuff like this. with my husband being in the military and all, we are SUPER careful what we say publicly relating to politics... and we're in a democracy!
The Black Watch is General Jinjur's personal Brigade unit.
The Hyena Brigade is not a single entity, but a loose grouping of private militias who all owe fealty to the Empress of the Maramasai. Any sheyena who has the means to support one can create a Brigade unit, as long as she pays a percentage of her unit's income to her Duchess and to the Empress.
Each Brigade unit can be rented out to fight battles for other people. Brigadiers often find themselves facing other Brigade units in conflicts.
In theory, all the units based in a Duchy should be loyal to that Duchess, and she can call on them when she needs to augment her own personal unit(s).
However, as Jinjur believes she's going to take over Rackenroon someday, the Black Watch has gotten cocky. They will replace Blood and Bone as the "house division" and since the Watch is also the family unit of Songween's sister Olnajine's clan, the Watch has a very long-standing rivalry with Blood and Bone.
Brigade units are sort of like sports teams in that respect. And for hyenas, warfare is a sport.
