The younger sister of Vivian DeRatry, Vanessa "Velvet" Burneez is a self-made rat-woman. She wanted to work in writing as a teenager, and write she has: not only has she written a whole book series (some of it critically acclaimed, others no so much), but also has done work for newspapers, magazines, and online articles. Velvet is a very busy lady, to the point where some have said she missed her calling as a gossip columnist. She loves knowing everything about everyone, and has never been above taking bribes or blackmailing for her silence.

The relationship between the Burneez sisters is shaky at best. Vivian and "Nessa" were only a year apart in age, and were often pitted against one another. Vivian was their father's favorite, while Vanessa was favored by their mother.
