Phineas froze in place, the otter's face immediately changing expression from amused, to one of apprehension and concern as he spotted three figures emerging onto the road from behind the trees. Three rats, each with a short sword sheathed in their scabbard, spaced themselves evenly across the road, facing the pair. Aaron spotted them as well, and a sudden feeling of dread overtook the young mouse. He had never seen a rat, but he somehow knew instantly that the situation wasn't good. He quickly ran beside Phineas and clutched his cloak, peering around the otter at the approaching rats.
The center rat waved to them, grinning cheekily. “Ahoy thar, otter! What brings you and your little friend out here to our neck of the woods?” The two others chuckled, continuing to walk toward them.
Phineas narrowed his gaze at the three, standing his ground as he called back to them. “I don’t recall this area being vermin territory, rat! Leave us be!”
“Aaw, come on, otter! There’s no need to be nasty with us.” The rat replied, grin still present. He stopped in front of the otter, the two others followed suit beside their leader. The center one leaned to his side, peering at Aaron as the mouse tried to stay out of his sight. “Aw, lookit you, little mousie,” he called to him condescendingly. “Ya look nice and strong for a young’n!” He gave a quick nod to the other two rats, who stepped forward, drawing their swords and flanking the pair. “You’d both fetch a good price on the market!”
Phineas grit his teeth and scowled at the lead rat. “Slavers…” He said under his breath, moving his walking staff against Aaron behind him, his eyes fixed on the three rats as they closed in. “Aaron, stay close behind me and back up,” he said quietly, his voice low and stern. Aaron did as he was told, holding onto Phineas’ cloak and stepping slowly back with the otter to the edge of the path, trying to keep all three rats in sight as the rats matched their movements.
“I’m warning you, rat! You keep moving along, or I’ll make you regret it!” Phineas continued to step back off the road, stopping when he felt the roots of a tree behind him.
The lead rat grinned, drawing his own sword, and pointing it at Phineas. “Now, there, riverdog, don’t be makin’ this hard for yaself, and nothing bad’ll happen to ya or the little mousie.”
