I always talk about it, but I never have posted my bike.
1989 Trek 400. Dura ace Cranks, 600 pedals, Random deep Vs
It's a slick little conversion. I like the geometry better than true track bikes, far less whippy. Little bit longer Rake.

Enjoy your knees while you can XP
I kind of wanted to build one as well, seeing them all over campus here, but I kind of got turned off when they became such a huge hit. They became the 'new cool' in bikes and I lost interest in converting my old Schwin. I have a Schwin Varsity from the 70s, its pretty sweet. I dont know the year though. Was my stepdads brothers

It's just a rumor that Fixed gears are inherently bad for your knees. I am not saying that they can't be bad for your knees, but rather it depends on how you ride them weather they are or not. I found that if I was spinning correctly I never had a problem.. and I have bad knees. I would notice right away if I was doing something wrong.. a huge problem is that kids find any old road bike after they have not touched a bike in 10 years, throw a fixed wheelset on, and instantly remove the brakes. Then they wonder why they get hit by cars, or tear up there knees. If you ride your bike properly, and don't take your brake-less fixed gear on the road it really is a ton of fun, and an entirely a new way to ride. For the road I have my Other Trek http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1893298/ right there <-
Well fixed gear denotes you can not stop pedaling. Single speed road bikes are the ones you can coast. Those have the same look as a fixie, but you can ride a little more casually. I would go for it, If that's an old Varsity I will never break. I forget the term, but it's like electro filet brazed (?) lugs.. you will never hurt that bike.
If you for whatever reason get bored and want to try it out, hit my up and I can help you with anything you need to know... Granted there is not much to know... still though, I can help :P

I have a 17 pound road bike from 1979 (they came that light then too). this fixie is like... 23ish pounds.. that's almost all wheelset though. Let's face it, it just looks cool. In Florida it's just too flat and sandy to get really far on trails. Though I did manage to give a few friends a run for their money last time I went out. Once it is warmer here than in cali again I will get back out to riding again. You should post your bike.
48 14 currently. I was thinking of a 44 18 for my polobike when i make it. The ratio on this bike is a heavy pull, but I am used to it.. and Florida is flat.
As far as the color.. well.. it came that way, so I went with it. I as fairly excited it was my skunk "Media's" colors. Still, just kinda came together that way.
What are you riding?

I mostly ride my 16 speed Miyata with alex rims deep V's and Armadillo Kevlar non flat racing tires. its a yellow black scheme
i'm actually building a fixie off one of my extra red fuji frames, but i'm not going to start until spring rolls around. riding a fixie in Chicago winter is suicide XD

What? No, its a part that makes a vertical drop out bike, a fixie. It makes it so you can rock the wheel back on a cam for proper chain tension. Fixies are normally horozontal drops, like a BMX. Didn't know Shimano made a 2300 with Trek ;)
Ummm 2005 Mongoose Black Diamond triple, 2009 Goose' Teocali Elite, 2010 Goose' Boot'r Team, a crappy Iron Horse Excelsior roadie, 10' Specialized p1?

We should actually chat sometime, seeing that I had a tough time articulating my point. That and I am a huge bike geek.
I kinda passively read the last thing you said, so let me clear this up just a tad. lol
That old Trek 400 already has horizontal drops, well... semi horizontal. I have more than enough play to get proper chain tension. If a bike has Vertical drops I don't even bother. I could do what you mentioned.. Or even get a tension cog off the chain stay, but I like to keep it simple.. Plus I am guessing the hubs you mentioned ain't too cheep, but crappy deep V full wheel sets are :P
I have had a few track bikes with true horizontal drops, but found the geometry to whippy. and the bottom bracket to high.
Other notes.
I have 170mm cranks on this, and never had a problem with pedal strike. Yet it has a lower than track bike bottom bracket, and has a significantly longer rake.
