I like the idea of some fantasy worlds where dragons hoard gold and gems not for some monetary reason, but because 1) Gold is a soft metal and dragons like to sleep on it because its better to sleep on then stone or other metals and their internal body heat makes it impossible for them to lay on cloth or straw without burning it, and 2) The metal and gems naturally augment their hard scales and makes their underbellies even harder to pierce with weapons.
