Well, everyone has different terms for it, but usually it goes sketch, lineart, flats, then shaded/done.

for me it goes: pencil, shading, pen, and ends in 'OMG is that what passes for color?' (which the scanner goofs into B&W anyway =P) whats 'flats'?

Flats is the base colour. Meaning, the colour you slap on with no shading or highlights on it yet. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3103560/

Both. Sometimes I just sketch what I think up, and sometimes I need references.

i've tryed using photographs as reference too, makes for a stunning picture to see the familiar suddenly animated and given fur. n.n
