Another pic of L'noel who seems to have his hands full of some tribbles. The uniform is based off one of those seen in the new Star Trek MMO game due out in 2010. He carries a older style but custom phaser circa 2268 mostly because of utility. Pocket phasers are easy to carry and it makes sense simply to upgrade the housing if he needs more firepower. Not to mention its alot more easier to aim than those hand dust buster looking phaser things the Next Generation used.

Yes, lets hope our troubles err..... tribbles are always small :)
L'noel is a bit old fashioned with his 2268 sidearm but he makes up for it by being a crack shot but only with the 2268 style phasers. It is similar to how someone might prefer a .45 caliber M1911 over a 9mm Beretta.

I agree about the phaser. I think the apex of phaser design is the late 23rd assault century ( http://www.phasers.net/2280/p2-2288b.jpg ) The dust buster, cobra, and then the dolphin seem like less well designed.
I always found it odd that the early 23rd century/tos design, though akward to aim due to the large wide mass on top could be more ergonomic and user friendly than some that comes 75 years later. and even odder that a sleek downed design ( http://www.phasers.net/2280/2271.htm ) was created then abandoned only to have another sleek design come along in that time.
I absolutely loved the TWoK era "battle jackets"... They were easily the best of the bunch in terms of uniforms. They appeared to be by far the most comfortable and the most functional... The only complaint I ever had with then was that they didn't display the person's rank and position (command, security/operations or science/medical) clearly enough...
As for the uniforms from TNG seasons 1 and 2, well, at least they weren't as bad as the overly-tight and utterly unflattering jumpsuits from the first movie, which put everyone's junk (but particularly that of Stephen Collins*) on prominent display (no wonder THAT uniform didn't last very long)...

It's worth noting that the only reason that the TWOK uniforms (or a slightly modified version) weren't used for TNG is because they didn't match the ship's design. Also, budget limitations kept them from having pockets. They'd have been PERFECT if they'd had pockets. They did have a few things I'd change, but overall I think they worked great.
Now, while I dislike Enterprise (to say the least), the designs were FANTASTIC. The uniforms are the most realistic of the bunch, and it would actually be good to compare them to TWOK uniforms. Enterprise's uniforms are those of a fledgling space agency just leaving our solar system, and so they reflect jumpsuits of a more modern bent, while TWOK's uniforms are those of an established space force that has fully transitioned to an interstellar exploration and peacekeeping task-force.

Those early TNG phasers especially were terrible. The actors could not aim them at all, and the SFX guys had to sometimes have the beam coming out at weird angles so that the actors actually were hitting stuff. The redesigned version was slightly better, but it had no aiming mechanism and no trigger guard. From what I've heard, that was Roddenberry demanding that the weapons not look like actual weapons, ignoring of course the basic ergonomics of the handgun that have evolved over the centuries. Roddenberry… well, let's just say that the Star Trek versions I enjoy the most tend to be the ones where Roddenberry's role is weakest. Or he's dead. Those TNG era phasers just don't do it for me. Give me the phasers from The Search for Spock or the ones they had in The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country. Now THOSE look good.
Um, sorry about the tirade there.
Oh, and I like the pic. I have to think about getting a Star Trek-themed commission of my character at one point.
