Yes, the drop shadow is definitely reminiscent of newspaper advertising of the day. These styles were just becoming popular in the 1840s. When I studied lettering 40 or 50 years ago, I wondered why they tended to use so many different fonts in a single advertisement. The simple answer was that they used movable type, and they would run out of one display font and start on another.
